Evolution of approved PFD colours in Canada

For many years CCG Approved PFD's had to be either red, orange or yellow. Knowing that this inhibited people from wearing PFD's, the industry lobbied to have the entire colour spectrum available for use on approved PFD's. In 1996 the Coast Guard changed the regulation and, today, all colours in the colour spectrum can be used on CCG Approved PFD's, providing they pass the stringent weathering tests described in the CCG Approved Fabrics section.

This was a major achievement for the industry and was extremely well received by both professional mariners and recreational enthusiasts. There has been wide acceptance amongst consumers of PFD's in all colours.
